ORONO, Maine — Bangor High School sophomore Alyssa Elliott s previous best in the triple jump had been 35 feet, 4 inches inside and 36-3 outside.

It s not anymore.

Elliott broke a 32-year-old University of Maine schoolgirl field house record by posting a jump of 37 feet, 7 inches on Saturday afternoon to lead the Rams to the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League Big Schools championship.

Elliott also won the long jump to help her Rams accumulate 108.5 points, which was good enough to edge Hampden Academy by 2.5 points and Brewer by 9 points. Mount Desert Island was fourth with 46 points followed by John Bapst of Bangor (34), Old Town (33) and Hermon (6).

Elliott broke the record of 36-9 set by Bangor High s Karen Watkins in 1987.

My mom [Heather Chapman] went to school with [Watkins],” said Elliott, who knew shattering the record was a realistic goal.

I wasn t surprised. I really wanted to get it,” Elliott said. I knew it was coming in the next year or two. I m glad I did it today.”

She said her previous jump gave her an indication that she wasn t going to have to wait another year or two to claim it.

I was just two inches off the record in the previous jump so I was hyped up on adrenaline,” said a smiling Elliott, who also picked up a pair of fifth-place points in the 200 meter dash.

Her long jump of 17-1 was one inch off her personal best.

Bangor coach Alan Mosca was pleased with the victory.

I have tremendous kids. They work very hard and they have a team-first attitude,” said Mosca, who added that the victory was a combination of holding our seeds and earning depth points.”

The other two winners for Bangor were sophomore Naomi Noack in the 55 meter dash, junior Mackenzie Lambert in the 400 and senior Sophia Wittmann in the pole vault. Lambert also collected six third-place points apiece in the 200 and high jump.

Wittmann took a fourth in the triple jump and Noack posted a fourth in the pole vault.

The co-top performers of the Big Schools girls meet were Brewer sophomore Morgan Honey and Hampden Academy junior Helen Shearer.

Honey won the 200 and the 55 hurdles and was second in the triple jump, while Shearer won the mile and two-mile runs and was second in the 800.

The other winners were Brewer s Sophie Inman (high jump), Mount Desert Island s Zoe Olson (800) and Old Town s Emma Hargreaves (shot put), along with the MDI 4-by-800 relay team of Olson, Grace Munger, Olivia Johnson and Katelyn Osborne and the Hampden Academy 4-by-200 relay team of Amelia Verhar, Abby Lyons, Emma Damboise and Chloe March.

Hampden Academy captured the boys big schools meet behind senior distance runners Wyatt Lord and Jason Mathies.

Lord shared co-top performer of the meet award with Bangor High School senior sprinter Landyn Francis.

Lord edged out Mathies in the 800 and the mile before Mathies beat his teammate in the two-mile run.

The 800 is my go-to race and his is the two-mile,” said Lord, who racked up 28 points to Mathies 26. I knew it was going to be a fight to the end.”

Wade Brown won the triple jump for Hampden Academy and the Broncos also won the 4-by-800 relay, which was comprised of Connor Glowa, Parker Harriman, Trevor Allen and Abbott Valentine, and took a second in the 4-by-200 relay with Stu Frye, Jack Dunning, Alex Sanchez and Chris Bruen.

Francis tallied his 28 points with victories in the 55-meter dash and the 400 and a second in the 200 behind teammate Andrew Munroe.

Landyn works hard,” said Mosca, who is also the Bangor boys coach. He didn t miss a lift this fall. He had his eye on this meet. He wants to continue this sport in college. He is a tremendous, tremendous leader.”

Hermon senior Zachary Beaton had a memorable meet with firsts in the 55 hurdles and high jump.

The other winners were Bangor s Munroe (200), Peter Blackwell (pole vault) and Ryker Brown (shot put) along with Old Town s Zachariah Fostun in the long jump and the Old Town s 4-by-200 relay team of Wayne Dorr, Elijah Veilleux, Nicholas Letourneau and Fostun.

Bangor s Tristan Stewart didn t win a race but racked up 22 points with seconds in the 55 dash and the 400 and a third in the 200.
